The Sorcerer Supreme takes the unsuspecting former surgeon on a psychedelic tour across the multiverse to show him how little he understands of the true nature of his existence. Within moments of meeting the Ancient One in Doctor Strange, Stephen Strange visits the Quantum Realm and beyond. (Note: There won’t be any spoilers below for Multiverse of Madness, or at least nothing beyond what already has been revealed in the film’s overabundance of trailers, but everything else that’s come before it in the MCU is fair game.) Doctor Strange Screenshots via DisneyĪ year before Doctor Strange hit theaters, Ant-Man introduced MCU viewers to the Quantum Realm, an alternate dimension that Scott Lang reaches by shrinking his body to a subatomic level. Let’s take a look back at the many projects that have set the stage for Multiverse of Madness and what they can tell us about Doctor Strange’s next chapter. So ahead of its release on Friday, a refresher is in order. The long-awaited sequel is set to tie in characters and plotlines from past MCU films and TV shows alike, even more so than the standard Marvel affair. Following Doctor Strange director Scott Derrickson’s departure from Multiverse of Madness in early 2020 because of “creative differences,” Raimi was entrusted with the reins of a movie that was teased as a mind-bending journey across the multiverse that would weave in elements of horror that the MCU has never seen. Twenty years after Sam Raimi directed the industry-shifting Spider-Man, the filmmaker returns to helm another Marvel movie. Now, more than five years after the release of 2016’s Doctor Strange and nearly three years since Benedict Cumberbatch and Elizabeth Olsen helped announce its sequel at the 2019 San Diego Comic-Con, Multiverse of Madness finally arrives on Friday. Thanks to the pandemic, however, the film faced multiple delays, and other projects shifted ahead of it on Marvel’s Phase 4 slate. How will Avengers 4 bring back our fallen heroes and defeat Thanos? Here's a quickfire batch of unsubstantiated theories. In another universe, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness would have arrived in crowded theaters across the world almost exactly a year ago, a few months after WandaVision premiered on Disney+ to help set up the blockbuster movie. This actually leaves him in a vulnerable position, and that might be why Strange knew the Avengers had a better chance of defeating Thanos after the used the Gauntlet to do his bidding instead of before. Thanos is obsessive, and once he fulfills his vision of "saving the world," the big purple baddie plans to retire. Stark must live because he has the capacity to figure out how to bring our heroes back and defeat Thanos once and for all. It seems that it likely is, since Strange told Stark before he died, something to the effect of, "This is the only way" or "We're in the end game." It can't be a coincidence Strange waited until the last minute to give up the Time Stone so he knew for sure that Tony Stark's life would be spared. That's the biggest question heading into Avengers 4 (unofficial title). Marvel Studios What Did Doctor Strange See In The Future? So this begs the question, is this present timeline where half of our heroes die the same future where the Avengers defeat Thanos? Strange knew half the world had to die, including himself, all along. That means he likely knew Star Lord was going to get emotional with Thanos before Peter Parker almost ripped off his Infinity Gauntlet. And that's what he found, just one future where the Avengers win. While Star Lord and Tony Stark fought over whose Thanos-killing plan was best, Strange looked through millions of futures to try to find the one where the Avengers win. This tells us that Doctor Strange is aware of the future. In order to save Tony's life, he calls the Time Stone from a hidden dimension and gifts it to Thanos. Is Thanos' defeat ahead? Marvel Avengers 4 Theories: Where Infinity Wars Ended And The Next Film May BeginĮarly in Avengers: Infinity War, Doctor Strange made it clear he would let Tony Stark and Peter Parker die before he gave his Time Stone to Thanos. What happened and where the Avengers 4 story might go next. Spoilers for the ending of 'Avengers: Infinity War' ahead.
